Experience
I've been teaching writing courses at the University of Central Florida for the last 7 years and I also taught Prep Writing at a local community college when I was a graduate student. At this point in my career I feel I have taught students at nearly every level of preparation and mindset. I've also had experience teaching students with various special needs accommodations. I've taught face to face classes, online courses and hybrid courses so I'm comfortable meeting with and working with students in whatever capacity is needed for their success. Currently at UCF I teach the required freshmen courses (ENC 1101 and ENC 1102) which focus on critical thinking, writing and research. I also teach in our BA program in Rhetoric and Composition and I mentor a STEM student through TRiO. In all of my courses and in my mentoring role a huge part of what I do is meet one-on-one with students at various stages of their assignments, projects, etc. Working closely with individual students is one of my favorite parts about teaching because I love getting to know students as individuals and seeing them grow as thinkers and as writers. One of the hardest parts about teaching a subject like writing (which let's be honest, many students dislike or feel unprepared for), is that students are taught a lot of unhealthy things about themselves as writers and about writing as a practice. I see my role as an educator as that of someone who not just facilitates learning in my subject area, but as someone who helps each individual student find their process and motivation for writing. I do not expect students to love writing, but I have a very high track record of helping my students improve greatly as writers because I focus on meeting them where they are. Like so much else in life, writing is a practice and a skill that can be built, not a "gift" that only a select few get. Everyone can be a better writer with the right combination of motivation and practice.
